About CTFNW

Using a computer is a key factor in achieving academic success and being prepared for today's job market, yet thousands of students in our local community do not have access to a home computer. These students, often economically disadvantaged, find themselves isolated by a "digital divide" which separates them from their more affluent or fortunate peers.

Children's Technology Foundation Northwest (CTFNW) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to technology and technology-related education for students throughout the Northwest.

A Growing Problem

Regular and consistent access to a computer is a critical requisite to be able to keep pace in a modern, 21st century classroom. Yet thousands of students, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or families, do not have access to a home computer. As budgetary resources in our public education institutions come under increasing strain, these same students also find themselves competing for or simply losing the opportunity to benefit from the scarce computer resources our schools struggle to afford.

The Pacific Northwest, despite being uniquely positioned in the veritable heart of the computer technology industry, has been particularly hard-pressed to combat this growing problem. In a recent investigation, The Oregonian reported that funding for technology in Oregon schools has declined nearly every year since 2005, at which point the state was ranked 38th in the nation for access to technology ("Oregon School Computer Labs Overwhelmed by Demands on Students", June 23, 2010).

Without access to technology and appropriate education regarding its use, economically disadvantaged students fall irrecoverably behind their more affluent peers. Their opportunities for research and learning are missed, their homework remains incomplete, and their grades plummet. In an era in which we have immediate and ready access to more information and technology than human history has ever had at any point before, literally tens of thousands of students in our local communities struggle to find the resources or opportunity to complete even the most basic tasks.

This gap between those with access to technology and those without is a barrier, as real and as deep as any physical canyon, that separates our children from both their potential and a promising future.

A Collaborative Effort

Children's Technology Foundation Northwest works in collaboration with educators, community leaders, and families to provide computers free of charge to students in need. In addition to hardware donations, every dollar donated to CTFNW is directly applied to achieving our goal of bridging the digital divide for all students.

Protecting the Environment
And Your Privacy

Children's Technology Foundation Northwest is a "green initiative". We are committed to protecting the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest through the recycling and refurbishing of donated computers. These otherwise-unused computers are given a "second life" in the homes of local students.

In addition to protecting the environment, we are passionate about protecting your privacy. Every precaution is taken to safeguard your personal information, whether it be obtained via communication or on your donated computer. All hardware received is processed using a thorough, multi-step solution designed to remove any private information which may otherwise be stored in a computer's memory.

Your Support, Their Future

Children's Technology Foundation Northwest believes that through your support, in collaboration with our local educators and community leaders, we can bridge the digital divide and help all students in our community reach their potential. Through donations of refurbished computers to families in need, assistance and education in learning how to use technology, and increasing access to the internet, students can grow and assume their roles as future members and leaders in our community.
